Pros: Vacuum/double insulated mini-keg for $120 (64 ounce version)…what else could you ask for…well…it could be yours for free if your a member of REI (see pictures below of vessel and “KEGCAP prices at REI)!!! If you spend enough at REI or with your REI credit card, you can use your dividend to get this “COMPLETE” mini-keg setup that these guys offer…they are one of the cheapest “COMPLETE” mini-keg options on the market. I say “COMPLETE” in the fact that it comes with it’s own CO2 source and picnic style beer faucet. Note: they are sold separately (both at REI), but to make this a mini-keg you need both the DrinkTanks growler vessel and the “KEGCAP” to make it a mini-keg. I also think it’s one of the most robust/durable mini-kegs on the market, as the CO2 charger/source is completely separate from the mini-keg vessel. All this makes the DrinkTanks mini-keg great for adventures and picnics!
Cons: The CO2 source is only a charger system that does not let you dial in a specific beer serving pressure. It appears you cannot hook it up to a larger setup (i.e. big CO2 tank for perpetual beer serving). Also, you will have to buy a longer “straw” (i.e. the tube that goes into the beer and brings the beer up to the faucet tube)! The “straw” that comes with the DrinkTanks “KEGCAP” is a bit short to properly suck all the beer out of the vessel. Finally, only a picnic tap can be used for this mini-keg setup. The ability to add your own style of beer faucet is not possible (unless you’re an engineer) with this mini-keg setup. It should be mentioned that the DrinkTanks setup comes in 64oz (half gallon) and 128 ounce (1 gallon) sizes. It’s a great system to go with if you are have never owned a growler and or don’t have room for a big keg setup. However, if you have an existing growler laying around there are much cheaper options for you that are discussed on this blog.
